Moblin Image Creator is a tool aimed at making life easier for the mobile and embedded developer. The tool is designed to be extremely flexible with platform-specific knowledge isolated to a platform definition. Initial focus is on a new class of devices known as Mobile Internet Devices (MIDs), but the design of Moblin Image Creator is not MID-specific and talk is already underway to add new platform definitions to build consumer electronics stacks, such as TV set-top boxes.
Produce robust, low power, user-friendly applications that are tuned for on Moblin-based devices. The Moblin software development kit (SDK) simplifies the task of porting an application to a target device, or writing one from scratch.
Because Moblin uses technology from well known open source projects (X, GTK+, Gstreamer*, Helix*, D-Bus, OpenGL, ALSA, etc), developers can easily adapt existing open source software to the unique UI requirements of MIDs. In many cases, existing Linux/x86 binaries can be used "as is", allowing developers to focus on the unique aspects of MIDs such as a touch based UI, simplified user experience, and extreme portability.
Specifically, we would love to see developers working on new applications in the following areas:
Location based services Using GPS for determining location, mapping, navigation, linking up to popular mapping services like Google Maps* or Mapquest*
Media content capture and sharing Capturing photos and videos and sharing content on popular web sites like Flickr*, Facebook*, YouTube*, and Picasa*; capturing audio recordings of events like lectures; taking voice notes in a course or meeting and sharing them with others.
Managing your life, staying connected and getting things done Storing your favorite contacts, keeping your busy calendar and "to do" list up to date, updating your blog, chatting with friends over IM, talking using voice over IP (VoIP), accessing your e-mail, communicating via video conferencing, editing and viewing documents in a variety of formats (PDF, OpenOffice, Microsoft Office, etc.)
Staying informed Getting the latest stock quotes, staying on top of messages in your FaceBook, getting the latest scores from your favorite team, watching live TV, staying on top of world news and events.
Keeping yourself entertained Playing games, reading e-books, listening to music or podcasts (local or streaming over the Internet), watching videos or movies.
