Xeround Releases Free Version of its Popular Cloud Database for MySQL Applications
Xeround, a provider of database software for public and private clouds, recently announced the availability of Xeround FREE, a no-cost edition of its elastic and highly available cloud database solution for MySQL applications.
With Xeround FREE, MySQL users can employ the cloud database solution’s functionality with ease, as no installation, configuration, or maintenance of a MySQL database in the cloud is required. Regarded as the only true native cloud database, Xeround FREE was developed specifically to avoid the pitfalls that usually come with conventional MySQL installation in the cloud. FREE is ideal for smaller applications and offers up to 10MB at no cost. At this time, Xeround FREE is available as a Heroku platform add-on and through Amazon EC2 in the United States.
Xeround CEO Razi Sharir commented on the new FREE release: “Xeround FREE is the direct result of developers asking for a free version of our cloud database service for their MySQL apps. Now everyone can enjoy a zero-management, simple, always-on database for their apps at no cost — so developers can experience the least amount of friction while developing in the cloud. Unlike Amazon RDS or other MySQL implementations out there, Xeround’s free offering is the only native cloud database, providing high availability and true elasticity with no management or configuration overhead.”
Besides the introduction of Xeround FREE, the company also released two other options for customers requiring additional scalability, larger databases, and added support. Dubbed Xeround BASIC and Xeround PRO, the options offer increased functionality at an affordable cost.
Customers seeking high availability and scalability in a cloud environment for their medium-sized applications should find Xeround BASIC as their best option. BASIC offers up to 250MB and its pricing starts at $17 per month. Those requiring unlimited scalability for their larger-scale applications should choose Xeround PRO, the company’s commercial version of its database-as-a-service. PRO includes an innovative auto-scaling feature for the database tier and has already secured a client base of over 300 paying customers. It’s priced on a pay-per-use basis that charges $0.21 per GB/hour of data and $0.43 per GB of data transfer.
Xeround BASIC and PRO are now available via the company’s Amazon EC2, Heroku, and Rackspace datacenters. Xeround offers a free 30-day trial for both options.

SkySQL and MariaDB Host MySQL Training Event
Developers, database administrators, IT architects, and others looking to learn more about the advantages of the MySQL database, MariaDB, and related technologies will be pleased to know that SkySQL has teamed up with MariaDB to present the inaugural SkySQL and MariaDB: Solutions Day for the MySQL Database event.
Set to be held on April 13, 2012, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. at the Hyatt Regency hotel in Santa Clara, California, Solutions Day for the MySQL Database promises plenty of training, consulting, and keynote speeches from some of the industry’s top MySQL and MariaDB experts. The list of speakers scheduled to be on hand for the event is headlined by Michael (Monty) Widenius and David Axmark, the two developers responsible for MySQL’s creation.
The event’s speakers and training sessions will concentrate on four general areas: data warehouse solutions, migration solutions, cloud solutions, and technology solutions. MySQL’s current and future trends will be discussed, giving those in attendance exclusive insight into the overall direction of the database industry. Widenius, Monty Program’s CEO and VP of community, said, “This Solutions Day event will be the perfect platform for us to announce our future plans for the SkySQL & MariaDB cooperation in terms of technology, partners and commercial solutions.”
SkySQL and MariaDB: Solutions Day for the MySQL Database’s keynotes and training offer several benefits to attendees. The training sessions will showcase a variety of useful tips, such as how to integrate applications with MySQL solutions, how to adapt MySQL solutions to the cloud, how to create high availability environments, and how to optimize, scale, and enhance MySQL deployments. Lastly, participants can use the event to network with others in the MySQL community. MySQL experts from the following organizations will provide hands-on training at the event: Calpont InfiniDB, Continuent, Monty Program, ScaleDB, Severalnines, SkySQL, Sphinx, Webyog, and more.
The event’s scheduled date is significant, as it comes one day after the completion of the Percona Live: MySQL Conference and Expo. This gives attendees one more day of training and informative discussions. “It’s great to have opportunities for MySQL diversity and it makes sense to have an additional day of important technical sessions to complement the User Conference," said Sheeri K. Cabral, a database administrator at the Mozilla Foundation.
Admission to SkySQL and MariaDB: Solutions Day for the MySQL Database is free of charge. Those interested in attending the event can register by visiting http://www.skysql.com/events/mysql-solutions-day.
