SolarWinds’ initial release of the Application Performance Monitor took place in January of this year. The company launched the product with the hopes of offering systems administrators a comprehensive and affordable solution for monitoring the performance of vital IT services in terms of the server resources they run on (Windows, Unix, Linux), the OS, and application components. SolarWinds’ APM continues the tradition of the company’s quest to provide IT management software that is both powerful and cost effective, and will likely add to its current client list that includes small businesses as well as Fortune 500 companies.
The list of new and improved features added to the Application Performance Monitor in version 4.2 is extensive. Users have the power to monitor a variety of Java-based applications via JMX MBean monitors, such as Apache Tomcat, GlassFish, JBoss, WebLogic, and WebSphere, among others. Users can easily monitor web applications thanks to APM’s integration with Synthetic End User Monitor. Complex scripts are supported, and Nagios scripts can be run natively without the need for conversion. Prior to display, reporting, and storage, users can execute mathematical operations on statistical values via data transforms. Trending can be displayed in a single plane through multi-value charts as well, and several expert templates come pre-installed that correspond with a host of common applications. Last, but not least, APM 4.2 has been revamped to give clients an improved user interface and speedier performance. Of course, APM 4.2 comes with many more features, but those are just some of the highlights.
APM 4.2 is currently available through the SolarWinds website, www.solarwinds.com, at a starting price of $2,495. SolarWinds includes the first year of maintenance at no extra charge. A free 30-day trial is also available for customers who wish to test the monitor’s features prior to making a purchase.
